Collagen and elastin get produced by your body; this is the substances that allow your skin to keep it’s smooth and youthful look and feel. Peptides play an important role; they are small proteins that stimulate the new cells in your body to grow and heal your skin.

“The verdict is still out on how beneficial they are,” stated Dr Ivona Percec, she is plastic surgeon that practices in cosmetic surgery and skin care.  “We don’t know for sure what the biological benefits are.”

Even though peptides can be found in several products, experts aren’t sure exactly which formulation may work. If they do indeed work, they do so by stimulating the replacement of collagen, elastin, as well as other components that suffer throughout aging. Why are we so concerned?  Well, Peptides are large particles, and therefore depending on the skin surface, they will not be able to penetrate deep enough so that they can achieve their job.

Some think peptides are suitable in moisturizers for hydrating the skin, this can then make wrinkle lines less noticeable, but we still have not seen reliable data that it reduces wrinkles on your skin.

Yes, all the acids will have a different effect on your skin. Lactic acid helps remove dead skin cells. Glycolic acid can help reduce wrinkles; this will make your skin look smoother and tighter.

Unfortunately, there are side effects, yes. For example, sun sensitivity, therefore, experts suggest that you use sunscreen every day.

Retinol

Retinol is promoted as a tried-and-true way to reduce signs of aging. Retinol is a natural form of vitamin A; it works by reducing the presence of wrinkles; it also increases the thickness and flexibility of the skin. There is a sufficient amount of evidence that proves retinol improves the appearance of wrinkles.

Retinol is an ingredient that can be found in several “over-the-counter” skin care treatment. A more effective form of retinol,  called tretinoin is available if prescribed by your doctor. Prescription retinol products will cause more side effects than the rest. These side effects may include burning of your skin, extreme warmth, and a tingling feeling.

Substances with antioxidant features include lycopene, beta-carotene, vitamins A, C and E, and selenium, according to the National Institutes of Health. These antioxidants are found in many foods, including vegetables, nuts, fruits, and some meats.

As for the health benefits, there are effective antioxidants. However, it’s the formulation of the essential antioxidants. Vitamins C and E are most commonly used in products, and the most time-tested.

Even though some products claim to reduce wrinkles or slow down aging, there is not enough evidence to show they work. Certain ingredients used in aging products are safe and effective; the trick is finding the right ingredient that works for you and your skin.
